Admin Rights on a Mac

Prior to the Summer of 2023, users of Mac, Windows, and Linux had to fill out lengthy documentation explaining why they required administrative privileges on their assigned work computer. However, we have now developed a new process specifically for Mac users using the latest version of our Apple management system, Jamf. All Mac devices that have migrated and connected to the unified Jamf tenant can now take full advantage of all the new features that the university has to offer, including a more convenient way of requesting administrative privileges.

Should you require assistance in determining the migration status of your device, we recommend that you contact Technology Services.

 Instructions

  1. With your migrated Mac, select the Gig’em thumb icon on the top of your screen.

  2. When you select this icon, a drop-down menu will appear with all the new features available on your Mac.

  3. Choose Request Admin to switch to Administrator mode from Standard User mode.

  4. After changing to Administrative mode, you can install necessary applications and updates without pausing your work.

  5. Your session will be timed, and after about 15 minutes, a notification will appear on your screen. Choose Yes to delay the message for another 15 minutes, or No to return to your original status as a Standard User.

It's important to note that Technology Services will monitor this activity to ensure that it meets the University's Acceptable Use Policy.
